Cordero Torres is a 14 year old Freshman at McKinney Boyd High School. He is a proud member of the McKinney Boyd Broncos Freshman baseball team where he plays short stop and second base. He considers the entire McKinney Boyd Baseball program his family and is proud to be a part of such an incredibly disciplined, determined and dedicated organization. On March 7, Cordero was diagnosed with Bell’s Palsy when he experienced partial paralysis on the left side of his face. Two weeks later, on March 23, he noticed he was losing movement in the right side of his face as well. After a trip to the ER and numerous scans and x-rays, doctors discovered a tumor in his chest. He was transferred to Medical City Children’s Hospital where he underwent a PETscan, chest x-ray, abdominal sonogram, bone marrow biopsy and a spinal tap. One Monday, March 24, he was diagnosed with T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. He received his first chemotherapy treatment on Tuesday, March 25. By Friday, March 28, his tumor was gone and his circulating blood showed no signs of Leukemia. On Saturday, March 29, he was in surgery to insert a port and released from the hospital on Sunday, March 30. As of April 4, there are no signs of Leukemia in his bone marrow or spinal fluid! He still suffers from bilateral facial paralysis and is unable to smile. As the nerves heal and regenerate, the facial paralysis should dissipate and he should regain full movement back in his face. He is in the fight of his life and he is determined to win and knows he will with the prayers, love and support he is receiving from family, friends and organizations like Strikes Against Cancer! He has a long, rough road ahead of him with 7 months of chemotherapy but his faith in God has more than equipped him to handle the challenge and win this fight!
